The Caldwell One-Room Schoolhouse

Delaware Township

Caldwell School 1956.jpeg

The Caldwell One-Room Schoolhouse Museum is symbolic of the educational heritage of western PA. Erected in 1880 by local craftsmen, it served as a "modern" replacement for an older timber structure that once stood near the site. The bricks used in building the Caldwell School were made on the A. E. Ball farm three miles east. Local hemlock was cut and hewn for the timbers.

The Caldwell Schoolhouse was renamed the Beringer-Caldwell One-Room School Museum on July 4, 1962, in honor of one-time Caldwell school graduate, eventual teacher, and later, museum curator, Mae Beringer. If you browse the archives of the Greenville Record Argus, it is possible to find historical articles written by Mae under her pen name Joannie Appleseed.
