Lafayette Panels on display until July 15!

From Thursday, June 12 through Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Mercer County Historical Society is proud to host a remarkable traveling exhibit on the life and legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette. Provided by the Western Pennsylvania Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour, this six-panel display highlights Lafayette’s pivotal role in the American Revolution, his historic 1824–1825 Farewell Tour across the United States, and his lasting influence on the ideals of liberty and democracy. Sponsored by organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution and the America250 Commission, the exhibit is part of a national initiative to commemorate Lafayette’s contributions during this milestone anniversary.

The panels are on display inside the Magoffin House next to an original bed believed to have been used by Lafayette during his 1825 visit to Mercer, when he stayed at the Hackney House Hotel. The bed has been part of the Historical Society’s collection since the 1960s and offers a tangible link to his brief but memorable stop in the area. The exhibit also coincides with Mercer County’s 225th anniversary celebrations, connecting our community’s history to a broader national story.

The exhibit is open to the public during regular museum hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, through July 15. Admission is free, and we invite you to stop in and explore this special display while it is here!
