The Helen Black Miller Chapel has a history dating back to the year 1826 when the Mercer Episcopal congregation was organized as St. John's Church. Meeting in churches and private homes the congregation built a chapel, 24 ft by 51 ft with a chancel 8 ft by 12 ft., in 1883 at a cost of $2,000. Consecrated as Grace Episcopal, the chapel stood on property donated by Miss Maria Magoffin of Mercer on South Pitt Street. The church flourished and on August 23, 1895, with a gift from Captain Charles W. Whistler, the church was moved to a new location and renamed the Church of St. Edmund the Martyr.
